“It’s a completely inconspicuous way to carry your gear. On your head, the Cache Cap looks like your everyday hat. What you don’t see, is that on the inside this cap has 6, count ’em, SIX HIDDEN POCKETS!” ~wazoogear.com
I’m a hat guy. It’s rare that I leave the house that I don’t have a ball cap or beanie on my head, time of year depending. I also like gadgets that have multiple functions and can give me an edge. Awhile back, I started seeing advertisements for a piece of kit called the Cache Cap produced by Wazoo Survival Gear. The Cache Cap comes in two styles, one with a Velcro patch on the front for moral patches and the other without the Velcro. I purchased the one with the Velcro patch as I was wearing for a job where I affixed a company logo patch.
Low Vis Appearance
From the outside they look like a plane old ball cap, but when you turn it over, it reveals what makes it special. There are three features that separate this ball cap from the standard ball cap. The inside of the cap has orange panels that could be used for signaling, additionally there are two strips of reflective material creating an X, the final feature are six pockets that can be used for stashing miscellaneous items. The three orange panels contain hidden pockets that are sealed with Velcro, on the bill there is a Velcro sealed pocked along with two small slash pockets.
Cache Cap Versatility
The concept behind the hat is to have survival gear hidden in the hat in case of an emergency where you may be lost in the woods. But can also function in an urban setting depending on how you load it. Wazoo sells kits and components to fulfill those needs. Personally, I don’t see the hat replacing a good survival kit in your pocket or other location on or near you. It’s too easy to lose a hat to have all your eggs in one basket. The other issue that I can see is people overloading the pockets with stuff and having it be too heavy, unnatural looking, and uncomfortable.
“The 6 pockets include 3 in the main crown of the hat, 1 hook and loop closure located on the middle of the bill, and 2 side narrow slot pockets also on the bill.” ~wazoogear.com
I’ve kept my load out to what are the bare necessities that I like to have with me. The following is what I’ve carrying in my cap: (* – Optional depending on what I’m doing, or where I am.)
My Cache Cap Loadout:
- Cash
- Personal meds/OTC meds
- Small plastic handcuff key*
- Small folding ceramic knife*
- Small ferro rod with ceramic scraper*
- Button compass *
- Water purification tablets*
Final Thoughts:
I like to keep the contents to a minimum. I only need the things that are essential for day-to-day activity. There is still room for additional items should I feel the need. Overall, I like this ball cap because it fills a niche for me. If I’m traveling and want to stash a few things in a manner that will attract little to no attention it works for me. I don’t see this as an end all be all for emergency gear. But an added a layer of redundancy to my daily carry items. If I were to purchase another, I would choose the one without the Velcro patch on front. To give it an even lower profile. They’re available in assorted colors, are size adjustable, are made from ripstop material, and are well constructed. MSRP is $36.00.
