I’ve been a fan of Clint Emerson for years ever since reading his book Escape the Wolf. Readers of this page should be familiar with the name Clint Emerson (https://clintemerson.com/ )former Navy SEAL and security consultant. Mr. Emerson has put together several emergency everyday carry (EDC) kits which can be purchased separately or together in the Violent Nomad Go Bag. The individual kits are the Urban EDC Survival Kit – $44.99, the Rural EDC Survival Kit – $39.99, and the M.A.R.C.H. EDC Kit – $39.99. The Go Bag combo is $99.99.
The bag itself is a string bag type made out of lightweight nylon material with two zipper compartments and a mesh area. It’s typical of the string bags that are sold by sports companies or sometimes given out at conventions by vendors. It will do the job but in my opinion, won’t stand up to a lot of overstuffing or hard use. The kits themselves come in plastic boxes, close with snap latches, and are lined with foam. These boxes are top-of-the-line Pelican or Outter boxes and I believe they are water-resistant. I wouldn’t recommend manipulating the snaps consistently as I don’t see them holding up to a lot of abuse.
The Urban kit contains the following items:
- Tactical Flashlight – 350 Lumen XML Q5 (takes 1 standard AA battery, not included)
- Heavy-duty Aircraft Aluminum Emergency Pen
- Aluminum High-Frequency Whistle
- Lightweight Emergency Compass
- Handcuff Key
- Zippo (lighter fluid not included)
- Ultra-Bright Keychain LED Flashlight
The Rural kit contains the following items:
- 6-in-1 Multi-Use Tool with pliers and flashlight (battery included)
- Wire Saw for Wood (or Throats)
- Emergency Whistle
- Compass
- Fire Starter
- 11-in-1 Multi-Use Pocket Card
- Ultra-Bright Keychain LED Flashlight
- Emergency Solar Blanket
The M.A.R.C.H. EDC Kit contains the following:
- 2 Rolls Kerlix Gauze (pack the wound)
- 1 Israeli Dressing (pressure dressing/tourniquet)
- 1 7mm Nasopharyngeal (cric/compromised airway)
- 1 Trauma Shear
- 1 LED Flashlight
- 1 14 Gauge Needle (Chest Decompression)
- 1 Emergency Blanket
M.A.R.C.H. is the acronym for the following conditions:
- M=Massive Hemorrhage
- A=Airway
- R=Respiratory
- C=Circulation
- H=Hypothermia
So I guess the question is what do I think about the items provided in the kits. I think the kits are generally made for emergency use to get you out of a bad situation. The items are not top-of-the-line quality but will all work to get you out of a bad place. The items in these kits will give you the basic tools, along with some training and knowledge you’ll be ahead of the game as opposed to doing nothing. For travelers, these kits are nice as they’re compact. Although if you’re doing carry-on only when flying you’ll have to lose the edged tools provided, and decide whether the tactical pen or lighter will make it
through airport security. The differences in the kits allow you to select the ones that fit your destination and pocket the items, the M.A.R.C.H. EDC Kit is universal. I think these kits are a good start place for someone looking to give themselves some basic tools to start with. My personal favorites are the Urban and the M.A.R.C.H. EDC Kits as they fill my needs best.
