Being fast and agile in the woods is crucial when chasing prey, which means looking hard at the gear you carry. In the book The Battle for Hunger Hill, the author describes one technique he implemented to make his infantry battalion faster and more responsive against the Opposing Forces at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana. The infantrymen used waist packs when in the field instead of relying on rucksacks to carry their gear. It’s been years since I read that book, but that lesson stuck with me. After hearing about Kifaru’s Rogan, I saw it as a pack for hunting and “quick reaction” stalks like the infantrymen fighting for Hunger Hill.
Rogan Overview
Starting with the Rogan’s dimensions, it is about five and a quarter inches long, ten inches wide, and six inches high. There are three pockets on the pack. The first pocket is a small stash pocket with a key hook. The second pocket, the main pocket, has two internal pockets with two sleeves. Above the pockets, Kifaru added dummy cord loops to tie down valuable items. The last pocket is designed to conceal carry a compact or sub-compact pistol. This pocket also has a tab for trigger guard covers, such as the Zaccheus holster or the Hill People Gear trigger guard cover. Lastly, the exterior’s bottom has mounting points for bear spray or rolled-up rain gear.

Rogan’s Performance and Uses
As a waist pack, the Rogan can fit into the woods or as an EDC bag. Others, like Kyle Defoor, have set up the Rogan for use on the range while wearing a battle belt. In my case, I used the pack to carry my essentials for deer hunting.
For my hunting, I divided my essentials into three pockets. In the first pocket, I stored engineer tape to mark my location if I needed to follow a blood trail. I kept a fleece cap and headlamp in Rogan’s main pocket for low-light conditions. I also stored a protein bar in that pocket. In the third pocket, I kept a tourniquet and a pressure bandage in case of a medical emergency.

I appreciated having the Rogan during hunting for several reasons. The first reason is that I could rotate the waist pack from my back to my front without my jacket getting twisted while traveling in the rig. I would wear it on my front to keep the pack on me if I needed to jump out without juggling the Rogan and my rifle. The last reason for using the pack during hunting is because it has a volume of 150 cubic inches. I have a forcing factor to carry what I need when going out for the hunt.

Final Thoughts
The Rogan is an American-made waist pack that I have found helpful while hunting or hiking. The pack provides enough volume to carry what I need and makes me deliberate with what I bring. For now, I will use the Rogan on hunts and short hikes. However, I am thinking of using it as an EDC pack. What are your thoughts? Comment below and let me know what you think.
