As a former member of 2nd Ranger Battalion in the 90’s, I’m all too familiar with the lightweight BDU’s (Battle Dress Uniform) that we were issued to us by the half dozen. They were a Nylon/Cotton Rip Stop uniform that was supposed to be as durable as the original heavyweight BDU’s but with less weight and more breathability. For the most part, they were a success and we never used our heavyweight uniforms moving forward. Although fabrics have come a long way since the 90’s, manufacturers like Beyond still recognize the benefits of the NyCo blend fabric. And recently launched the stylish yet affordable K5 Maker’s Pant.
Quality Construction
Beyond opted for a 60% pima cotton, 40% CORDURA® nylon blend for these pants. This rip stop fabric has been time tested for durability. I can attest to this having torture tested a similar blend in the Ranger Regiment. Although I loved the lightweight durability of this fabric, I wasn’t a huge fan of its rigidity, or lack of stretch. Fortunately, Beyond added a liberal swath of 4 way stretch fabric in the crotch region the Makers Pant. Allowing more freedom in an area desperately in need of freedom. This more breathable fabric may in fact reduce the dreaded “swamp ass” that tends to occur in warmer temperatures.
In all seriousness, these are a great every day pant. The legs are a bit tapered so you’re not swimming in excess material where it’s not needed. Furthermore, an adjustable button hem allows the wearer to further taper the bottom of the leg. Perfect for riding a bike or motorcycle. Generous, mesh lined hand pockets up front are roomy inside although the opening could be a bit larger. Maybe I have big ape hands, who knows. Beyond Clothing added a handy little loop above the right hand pocket for attaching whatever. A single button cargo pocket on the thigh perfectly fits my iPhone XS Max (with case). However, the button vs. button hole is a bit of a struggle at times. I think Beyond should revisit the button size in my opinion. Maybe dial it back from 11.

Final Thoughts:
The K5 Maker’s Pant is one of my favorite pairs to wear. Available in Rustic Green, Woodland Camouflage, Tiger Stripe or mild to wild. A few additional color options would only have me purchasing more of these. Especially if they were solid colors. Tan, gray or black would be sure things for me. Although the Tiger Stripe camouflage is a lot to take in, I am seeing more and more people using it as a fashion statement. I got my fill of camouflage in the 90’s so I’m a bit impartial to the solid color.
Hopefully in the next few weeks, The Gear Bunker will be testing more gear like the K5 Testa Soft Shell from Beyond Clothing, so stay tuned…

Thanks for the review! I have to agree with you on their tiger stripe. I don’t know why they went with such a vibrant color scheme on those pants. To me, tiger stripe has always looked better when it is muted and faded on well worn pants. You can find vintage faded tiger stripe pants at most surplus stores, albeit the quality of materials won’t be as good as these. I’m getting mine tailored right now actually.
If you’re interested in a budget version of these types of outdoors pants that have worked for me, it is the “Wrangler ATG”; specifically their synthetic utility pants. They have the solid colors you prefer. I can’t speak to their durability, but they have held up great so far. Thanks again.
