Commute – To travel some distance between one’s home and place of work on a regular basis.
Working remotely, whether from a coffee shop, a library or outside somewhere, the more simple and streamlined your kit, the more enjoyable your experience will be. Carrying only the essentials allows you to be more fluid when moving through crowds of people and cramped public transportation.
Carrying only the essentials also gives you the ability to pack up quickly and move, whether that is to break contact from a bad situation or to just change locations in order to jump start your productivity.
SOG Surrept/16 Daypack
I admit that I have a bag problem. I own and have used several daypacks over the years and they tend to all end up in my gear closet, that is until a few months ago. After being teased by SOG on the release of their new line of backpacks, I had to get my hands on one to see what the hype was all about. They have a few different sizes and color combinations to choose from. I selected the 16-liter daypack in their steel blue color.
The 16-liter size is, in my opinion, the perfect size for the everyday commuter. Whether you’re headed into the office, to school or just to the local coffee shop to get some work done, the SOG Surrept/16 will carry what you need without the bulk and unnecessary features of other daypacks. I chose the steel blue color to keep a lower profile and blend into the urban environment.
The exterior of the SOG Surrept/16 keeps a low profile and protects the contents from inclement weather with a 4200 Nylon Ripstop material. The material is pliable and quiet when in use. I say that because I’ve used some backpacks that are made from very stiff materials that are just not conducive for everyday use, especially in urban or office settings. I cannot stand velcro or loud zippers, especially when in a quieter environment.
The water bottle pockets actually hold a water bottle securely. I cannot tell you how many times I chose not to buy a daypack solely because the water bottle pockets were poorly designed. Then SOG finished off the exterior design with a hidden pocket on the bottom of the pack. Nobody would know otherwise unless you told them about it. The way they recessed the zipper and seam, make it virtually impossible to detect, even when carrying it on your back.
The interior of this daypack is equally impressive. Not only is there a padded sleeve for my 15″ MacBook, but they also provide a document sleeve that will easily accommodate your paperwork, legal pads, and document folders. From there, you have some smaller organization pockets. I use these for my writing utensils, MacBook charger, and wireless mouse. Then you’re left with the main compartment that will easily hold a change of clothes, rain jacket, first aid kit, and some snacks or food for the day.
The team at SOG (Studies and Observations Group) really hit the nail on the head with the design of this new line of daypacks.

Honestly, all I use regularly when commuting is the laptop and laptop charger. I keep my iPhone charged when at home or driving, so I rarely need to charge when working remotely somewhere. If I had to slim things down from where I’m at, then I probably would look to go with an even more streamlined daypack such as the Surrept/12.
Whether you’re a busy professional or college student, the new line of SOG Surrept Daypacks will keep you organized on the move and enhance your capabilities throughout the day.
