I have recently been evaluating the ParaShears from Studies and Observations Group, commonly known as SOG. Having been an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for twenty two years plus a Red Cross Instructor for almost twenty years, I’ve had the opportunity see many improvements in both skills, knowledge, and gear related to providing emergency medical treatment.
One basic piece of gear that anyone involved in providing medical treatment is the humble EMT/medical shear. Used for everything from cutting bandages, exposing injuries or areas of the body for examination/treatment. It’s a standard tool you’ll see on all nurses, first responders and soldiers. Until recently the EMT shear was just that, a simple shear, but recently new multifunction options have become available. An available versatile option from SOG is the ParaShear.
SOG ParaShears Video Review:
SOG Compound Leverage
“SOG’s proprietary Compound Leverage technology works by employing multiple pivot points that generate greater handle travel in relation to plier movement. The result is a leverage advantage that makes cutting smoother and easier.” – sogknives.com
The ParaShear incorporates all of the following tools into one compact and lightweight package:
- Shears
- Tweezers
- Bottle opener
- flat head screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Serrated rope cutting blade
- Awl
- Ruler in inches/metric
- Seat belt cutter
- Glass breaker
The ParaShear is made from 3Cr13 blade steel with stainless steel handles and weighing only 4.8 ounces. The included nylon pouch is designed to fit onto MOLLE webbing or a belt and comes in black or red. Fit and finish is tight and tidy as expected from a SOG professional tool and the ParaShear worked without a hitch in my battery of tests. And with an MSRP of only $74.95, the ParaShear is a great value to add to your medical kit or EDC.
As an EMT, I like this tool because it provides several options for the first responder or average person. I also think it’s ideal for situations where weight and load is an issue and you need a tool that can do a number of things. I would have liked to have a set of ParaShears when I was working in Puerto Rico in 2017 after Hurricane Maria.
