Helix Backcountry is a compact, lightweight lantern which puts out a bright beam that’s easy on the eyes
I recently received the Princeton Tec Helix Backcountry lantern to review. This is my first experience with a rechargeable lantern and I’m impressed with the design and function of this lamp. The lamps folding legs and compressable globe allow it to have a small foot-print for storage. The lamp features both red and white light colors as well as high, low and strobe settings. The other interesting feature is that there is no traditional push button for turning the lamp off and on. Instead, there is a swipe pad to control the brightness setting, color, and strobe mode. Swiping the plastic pad takes a little trial and error to get used to. But it’s a nice feature and helps the Helix achieve an IPX6 Waterproof rating.

Another nice feature that the Helix Backcountry offers is the rechargeable feature. For outdoor activities or emergency situations this is a plus. The provided micro USB cable can be used for conventional charging from an AC or DC source. Additionally, combining the Helix Backcountry with a compatible solar panel is a great combination for camping or emergency situations.
The globe cam be compressed and the legs fold to allow for easy storage in a backpack or any other situation where space is an issue. The globe has a folding half ring for clipping for hanging the lamp, and can also be removed from the lamp for an even smaller package.

“The Glow-in-the-dark collapsible globe and folding legs help Helix Backcountry to shrink in size when it’s time to pack it away. The lantern design even incorporates several hanging options via the top and legs. The globe can be removed to make a more focused spot beam.” ~princetontec.com
Final thought:
I really like this portable, rechargeable lamp and think it offers a ton of options for outdoors and emergency use. The compact size, weight, light options, and ability to recharge put it out in front of battery powered lamps. The Helix Backcountry from Princeton Tec should be on any camper, overlander or peppers radar.
