Hestra
Located in the uplands of the Swedish province of Småland, Martin Magnusson and his family settled and began making gloves in 1936. Magnusson began by making gloves for the local lumberjacks in his workshop. It soon evolved into skiing gloves and now over 80 years later, Hestra is in 25 countries selling over 400 different styles of gloves.
My introduction to Hestra gloves came in 2017 on a heli-ski trip to Revelstoke, British Columbia. A trip that took months of meticulous planning and was bound to be epic. My two brothers and 9 friends from all over the country meeting in BC to shred some heli-powder. Well, until United Airlines lost all my luggage and equipment for this trip. And delayed my travel over 24 hours to my destination in Kelowna, BC.
I was the last to arrive and literally had only the clothes on my back. I had to beg, borrow and steal equipment from the group as well as Selkirk Tangiers Heli-Skiing. All told, I only had to purchase a helmet and some warm gloves as temperatures were 20 below freezing. And I can’t stand cold toes or fingers. The Selkirk Tangiers pro shop had an assortment of Hestra gloves in the shop and I quickly settled on a pair of Army Leather Heli-Ski Gloves for a cool $200CDN. I wasn’t planning to f#&% around with cold fingers on this trip.
Long story short…the trip was epic, my fingers were good-to-go, and my ski equipment arrived the day before I had to leave for SHOT Show in Las Vegas. We enjoyed the heli-skiing, drank some good Canadien Whisky and only crashed one of three cars. But my take away in all this was the amazing gloves that were comfortable, warm and functional. I became a believer on that trip and it’s led me to additional Hestra products. Most recently, the Ergo-Grip Active Glove.
Ergo Grip Glove
Looking for something less bulky during the winter months for work and around town, the Ergo Grip Glove looked to be the perfect mix. Just enough insulation while still offering maximum feel while manipulating tools or implements. Shoveling snow, clearing snow off of a vehicle, loading the truck with building materials, it can all be handled with this glove. The durable goat leather palm resists abrasion while offering maximum grip. While the upper section blocks wind with GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® Breeze.
Since my neck of the woods has been blanketed with snow since 30 October, the Ergo Grip Glove has been my daily driver. Great for daily tasks when the temps are around freezing. Although this multi-purpose streamlined glove allows maximum tactile feel, I wouldn’t count on its insulation for extended periods of time when the temperatures dip too far below freezing. Since I’m in and out of a vehicle most of the day, it’s been the perfect blend of warmth and grip.
