In the first Bourne movie there is a scene where Jason Bourne goes to a bank and accesses a safe deposit box. In the box are various forms of identification, cash and a pistol. He takes the ID and cash and begins his journey to avoid the forces looking to capture or kill him. I was always fascinated by the idea of the safe deposit box or a hidden escape pod. Recently I decided to put one together. I don’t have any nefarious forces or agencies seeking me out but thought it would be a fun experiment. After all these are crazy times and one never knows.
A person could imagine any number of scenarios where it would be useful to have a small stash of items in an emergency situation. I didn’t want to make a survival kit per se, but something that could get me through a verity of situations. I also wanted something small enough that its contents could be carried on my person. Obviously, this kit is meant to be flexible to meet the individual needs, situation, laws and the location of the user.
I started out with an MTM dry box, I choose the smaller size intentionally as I didn’t want to feel the need to fill up every bit of space in it, I wanted minimal items.
Inside I included the following items for my test run.
- Glock 43 with 2 magazines
- MTM 9mm Ammo wallet
- SWAT T Tourniquet
- ITS Tactical Spie Stick Kit
- Photon Micro light
- Spyderco Delicia 4 with combo edge
- Unlocked cell phone and sim card
- Small first aid kit
- Disposable rain poncho
- Plastic bag with an assortment of over-the-counter meds
- Lip Balm
- A small roll of duct tape
- Cash and a few silver coins
If I were doing this for real, I would include an encrypted password protected thumb drive with copies of important documents on it. Again, this is a fantasy kit that I put together but depending on where you are and what you do, it may make sense for you to have a kit like this. The MTM dry box has worked great for me with no leaks. Personally, I probably wouldn’t bury a kit like this, but have it concealed in a location where I could quickly retrieve it. Should an emergency arise where I needed the contents quickly.
