Many people, including myself, have overlooked flashlights as a part of our respective EDC. Instead, we rely on our phones’ lights which are occasionally unwieldy and less dependable to use in emergencies. Olight has introduced the Baton 3 Pro flashlight as an option to fill that EDC requirement for a standalone light source.

Baton 3 Pro Overview
The Baton 3 Pro is a 4-inch compact flashlight with an all-metal body. A built-in magnet at the Baton 3’s tail-cap allows users to work hands-free around a metal surface. I also assessed the magnets strength inside my truck’s hood, and it worked without a problem. The tail-cap is where the included magnetic charger attaches to the Baton 3 to charge the flashlight.

A cross-knurled section above the tail-cap runs around the Baton 3 Pro’s body. This textured area increases the user’s grip on the Baton 3 Pro when conditions are wet or when wearing gloves. Above the knurled section at the Baton 3 Pro’s head is a 2-way pocket clip. The 2-way pocket clip is an excellent addition to carrying the flashlight in one’s pant pocket. The 2-way belt clip also features a small lanyard attachment. I also evaluated attaching the 2-way pocket clip on the brim of a baseball cap as an improvised headlight. It does work for short periods, but if I needed to use a headlamp for a long time, I would use an actual headlamp.

On the side opposite the belt clip is the Baton 3 Pro’s power button. The power button also features a battery level indicator. The battery level indicator will show green when the battery is above 60%. The light will change orange when the battery’s life is between 60% and 10%. Once the battery reaches between 10% and 5%, the indicator will turn solid red. The indicator will blink red once the batter is less than 5%. The power button also controls the brightness levels and two other built-in functions, such as a timer or lockout mode.
At the Baton 3’s head are the lens, LED, reflector, and bezel. It also contains a proximity sensor to automatically dim the brightness when the lights head is near a surface. The Baton 3 Pro has a flat bezel with a little under an inch diameter. The flat bezel helps to prevent the development of holes in clothing when carrying the Baton 3 Pro in a pocket.
Baton 3 Pro Features
The Baton 3 Pro has six different light modes programmed into the flashlight. The lowest setting is Moonlight which has an output of only 0.5 lumens. The low setting has an output of 15 lumens and 100 candelas, reaching 20 meters. The next setting is medium with an output of 120 lumens and 650 candela that throws out to 50 meters. The high setting has an initial output of 600 lumens and 3,206 candelas with a throw of 110 meters for the first three hours of single and continuous use. After three hours, the flashlight will decrease the output to 120 lumens for the last 25 minutes before the battery runs out of energy.
The highest setting is Turbo. In this setting, the Baton 3 Pro outputs 1,500 lumens and 7,900 candelas for the first two minutes for a throw out to 175 meters. After those two minutes, the Baton 3 Pro’s Turbo setting will have an output of 600 lumens for just under three hours. At that point, the lumens will drop to 120 until the battery needs recharging. The light’s final mode is a strobe mode that is useful for signaling purposes or temporarily blinding an assailant.

A neat feature of the Baton 3 Pro is the proximity sensor in the flashlight’s head. When the flashlight is the high or Turbo brightness, the light will automatically dim the brightness to the medium setting when the light is near a surface such as a wall or a table. This feature is helpful to protect surfaces when the Baton 3 Pro is in the high or Turbo modes.
There are two features that the flashlight has programmed. The first feature is a locking feature to prevent negligent discharges of light. This locking feature helps prevent the Baton 3 Pro from burning clothing incase something accidentally activates the flashlight in a pocket. The second feature is a timer function. Once activated, the timer will turn the light off in three or nine minutes. This feature can help save the battery if a user forgets to turn off the flashlight.

Final Thoughts
Having a compact flashlight is an integral part of one’s EDC kit. Olight’s new release, the Baton 3 Pro, is an option for a more discreet EDC loadout. I like that the Baton 3 Pro’s six light modes provide different options for different situations. Another handy feature I appreciate in the Baton 3 Pro is the magnetic tail-cap. The magnetic tail-cap will come in handy if I am working around metal surfaces and I need to use both hands.
