The US-744X from MTM | Watch is an elite dive watch dressed up for the boardroom
Better known for their tactical watches, MTM | WATCH recently added to their Elite Collection of watches. Inspired by the elusive Virginia class attack submarines, the US-744X is a tier-one diver’s watch. Machined from solid Grade 5 Titanium, the 45mm x 16mm case and bracelet weigh only 6.5 ounces combined. A sleek multi colored brass dial incorporate tritium-gas tubes in lieu of numerals to provide readability in low light conditions. The hands are also equipped with tritium-gas filled tubes making them easy to read underwater. The second hand smoothly sweeps across the elegant dial giving the US-744X a very classy feel. A feature typically found on higher end watches.
A unidirectional ratcheting bezel also features a tritium insert at the twelve o’clock position. I recently used the bezel while diving in Antigua to keep track of my bottom time. Backing up my digital dive computer should the battery fail. Although our depths bottomed out around 100 feet, the US-744X is rated to an incredible depth of 1640 feel below the surface. Which is far beyond the depth a diver would find themselves but a good measure of the watch’s capability to withstand extreme pressures.
MTM | Watch US-744X Video Overview:
The brass dial features three distinct sub-dials. One on the left measuring the battery reserve. Another on the right indicating the day of the week. And finally, a dial numbered 1-31 on the bottom indicating the day of the month. My biggest complaint is with that dial in particular. If you can actually read the number the hand is pointing to, you’re much better than me. Even with my old-man glasses on. To fit all 31 numbers on such a small sub-dial, the font size seems microscopic. I would have preferred a traditional date window for both the day of the week and date.
A thick multi-coated, anti-reflective, scratch resistant sapphire crystal protects the layered brass dial below. What makes the US-744X among my favorite time pieces is the addition of a sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Exposing the intricate movement that keeps the US-744X ticking. That’s right, no batteries in this beast of an automatic. The Grand Automatic Caliber 6R20 movement features 29 jewels with a lengthy 45-hour automatic power reserve. Allowing you to let this watch rest for a day while not loosing a second.

The Elite Collection watches add several small details in the case and bracelet to set the US-744X apart from watches found in the Tactical Collection. Offsetting the rich silver titanium case are black carbon accents on the side of the watch. Additionally, the titanium bracelet features “MTM” engravings on the clasp. And a cool three dimensional gear that makes for an interesting interface when locking this dive watch onto your wrist.
Final thoughts:
I’ll admit it. I’m a little bit of a fan of the timepieces coming out of the MTM camp. I own a handful of pieces from the Tactical Collection. And I continue to rotate through them regularly. But I like this new Elite Collection. Maybe it’s a sign of my transition into mid-life. Not the crisis part…yet. But a more refined lifestyle. The US-744 X-ray oozes class yet has the guts to withstand non human underwater pressures. Additionally, I’m delighted that MTM used Tritium filled tubes for hourly indexing as well as both hands. It’s a feature that makes all the difference at night.
If you are looking to step up your watch game, dive into the Elite Collection and see if something suits you.
