Midland’s T71 X-Talker Portable 2-Way Radio | Now USB Rechargable

June 23, 2022 by Erik Meisner 2 Comments

T71

One of our biggest supporters, Midland Radio, recently set us up with a pair of T71 X-Talker 2-Way Handheld Radios for our trip to Costa Rica. The mission: to rent a pair of Overland equipped FJ Cruisers from Nomad America and explore the Pacific Coast of the country for a little over a week. With my wife and I in one vehicle, and our 2 sons in the other, having some sort of communication was critical. Our off-road vehicles back home are all equipped with Midland Micro Mobile Radios. So we were pleased to bring their newest offering in the X-Talker line.

These portable handhelds have a lot of the same features of previous iterations of the X-Talkers. But the T71 model has a feature I’ve been desperately wanting. A USB charging port. Now keeping the radios topped off while on a trip is as easy as plugging them into any 12 volt USB port in the vehicle. In the past, I had to pack along the awkward desk charger and 12 volt plug adapter. Now I just bring the included Micro USB cable and top off the handheld as needed.

T71 X-Talker Video:

Navigating the rugged costal roads of Costa Rica, maintaining good clear communication between both vehicles was essential. It was the end of Costa Rica’s rainy season and the road conditions were in rough shape from wash outs. Several times, we approached planned river crossings only to find them impassable due to the volume of water. One vehicle would maintain the high ground while the other would creep down to investigate. The radios just made maneuvering quicker and safe. Not to mention our conversational chatter while driving through a foreign country.

From the beaches to the rainforest and volcanoes, The T71 X-Talkers were one of the most used pieces of equipment on this adventure.

T71 X-Talker Features:

Did you have problems with getting the radios into Costa Rica 🇨🇷?
Is it legal to use these radios in Costa Rica?
I’m looking to buy the same radios
Thanks in advance for your response

We had no issues with the radios in Costa Rica. They were in our check bags on the airline and no one asked about them in country.
