About twelve years ago, there was a major storm in my area of New Jersey, and we lost power.
Luckily, it only lasted for about eighteen hours, but the lesson learned once again is how much we rely on external power for our news and information. In addition to the basic emergency supplies like food and water.
A battery-powered radio like the Midland ER10VP should also be on the list.
In an era where we heavily rely on our phones for information, a battery-powered radio seems like a fail-proof can and string.

For emergency situations, one of the devices I use is a Midland ER10VP Emergency Alert AM/FM Weather Radio with a built-in flashlight. It’s powered by three replaceable AA batteries and receives AM, FM, and WX stations. It can even give weather alerts when programmed. The ER10VP model is small, lightweight and is sized so that you can easily take it with you while traveling.
Midland ER10VP Features:
- NOAA Weather Radio with Alert – delivers visual and audio alerts
- LED High/Lo Beam Flashlight w/ SOS strobe
- AM/FM Radio with Digital Clock
- Headphone jack
- Wrist Lanyard
- Compact Size: 5″ x 3″ x 1.2″
- Includes 3 Midland AA Batteries
- MSRP: $19.99
Final Thoughts:
I own two Midland weather radios; one is a solar/crank powered one that I keep with my emergency supplies. And the ER10VP I keep with my travel gear in the vehicle. Reception is good with the antenna extended and the built-in flashlight is handy. News and information is essential in an emergency situation and having a radio that doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi and external power is essential to remaining informed during an emergency. I think everyone should have one of these with their emergency supplies. And for under $20, there’s no excuse not to have one.
