Born from the Swiss Alps, Mammut has been producing climbing and outdoor gear for almost 160 years. So when I was asked to take a look at their new Sertig II Low Multi Purpose shoe, I jumped at the chance. When I first opened the box, I was a bit perplexed. It looks and feels like a running shoe on top. But shares the sole of a hiker.
The upper is made from a lightweight Air-Mesh material and is lined with Vent-Mesh. Giving the Sertig II an airy, breathable, tennis shoe like feel. Making this $135 shoe perfect for those warm adventures where waterproofness isn’t a priority. If Gore-Tex is your jam, the Sertig II has a GTX version available for $155. Looking at the sole, Mammut utilized a proprietary Swiss Design rubber blend. Providing fantastic grip that you can rely on. The aggressive tread pattern holds true on loose ground and cleans mud out of the lugs quickly. Additionally, the soft EVA midsole offers more dampening than you’d expect over rough terrain and rocks.
“The Sertig II Low is a lightweight and robust multi-purpose shoe designed for your active lifestyle. The high stack height in combination with the strong EVA midsole gives the shoe outstanding damping properties. The sole featuring the Mammut Swiss Design rubber blend provides grip you can rely on. A stable, comfortable and stylish shoe offering outstanding value for money.” ~mammut.com

When packing for a trip to Outdoor Retailer in Denver followed by four days in Southern Wyoming, the Sertig II Low was the only shoe I brought. Other than my trusty flip flops of course. On the hard concrete floors of the Colorado Convention Center, the soft EVA midsole played a big part. I always struggle with what to wear on my feet when pounding the concrete. Additionally, it was almost 100 degrees in August so I wore these without socks. Fortunately, a thin Vent-Mesh liner helped move the sweat from my feet outside the shoe. Keeping my feet from getting all swampy.

While up in Wyoming, trail hiking was on the menu. Hot and dry was the climate and I couldn’t have chosen a better shoe for the trip. Plenty of grip on the dusty trails while providing all-day comfort. The Sertig II exceeded my expectations. They even work in town but the white/black color combo remains a little on the flashy side. In fact, all 3 available color ways are a bit bright. Mammut has been around the block and they continue to get their footwear right. If you’re looking for a competent trail shoe that you can wear in town all-day, the Sertig II Low or Sertig GTX may be worth the look.
