Now that the HERO9 is available, is it really that much better than the HERO8?
We take a closer look at the new GoPro HERO9 Black and how it compares to the previous model. The action camera market has been heating up over the past few years with several model encroaching on GoPro’s long standing grasp of this segment. So we ask the question, “is it worth buying?”
To take a closer look, We asked our local GoPro expert, Luke Datema from Datema Media, for his opinion. Here, he straps the HERO9 to an FPV drone for a spin around his favorite practice area. And compares the new offering from GoPro along side its predecessor, the HERO8. Here’s what he found:

One of our favorite new features of the HERO9 are the “Mod’s” available from GoPro.
Mod’s are GoPro accessories specific to the HERO9 that enhance the cameras function and abilities. Accessories that can morph this simple action camera into something else. Something more versatile. Choose the auxiliary screen, external microphone, lights or an enhanced wide angle lens. Hell, pick them all and see what you can create.

Media Mod

During a recent trip to Costa Rica, we used the HERO9 as our primary camera. The video can be seen here.
Hypersmooth 3.0
Hypersmooth 3.0 is the latest iteration of GoPro’s internal image stabilization. Now with in-camera horizon leveling, it’s the most advanced version as well. For most action sports, the horizon leveling makes the footage much more cinematic. Coupled with Hypersmooth 3.0, anyone can create professional looking action content.
Capturing 5k video, a front facing screen and the ability to add a microphone and light. These features make the HERO9 Black one of our favorite vlogging set-ups. Especially when traveling due to its small size. Having the Zeus Mini providing fill-lighting in low light conditions is something these action cameras desperately need. And we’ll be primarily using the GoPro HERO9 moving forward.
