Medical skills are a valuable skill to learn and practice. Chances are you’re going to put those medical skills to use before you’ll ever need to go to your gun.
During a shooting course I attended, the instructor conducted a 2-hour block of medical training focusing on gunshot wounds and trauma.
Up to that point, I’d only had the basic Red Cross training. Now that I’ve had that additional training. I now feel much more confident in dealing with gunshot wounds, traumatic injuries and identifying improvised medical gear.
If I Had To Choose One Medical Item to Carry
At a minimum, I’m typically carrying a SWAT-T Tourniquet in my back pocket, but what if I do not have access to my first aid kit or trauma kit when something happens? This is where training comes into play and the ability to know how those items actually work. Knowing how the items in your medical kit work, you can then better identify improvised options for pressure dressings, tourniquets, chest seals and splints.
Take a look at the following video as Kerry Davis from Dark Angel Medical covers some improvised medical gear options for dealing with traumatic injuries in the field.
