A fact of life while traveling is ensuring you pack the correct charging cables for various devices. A recent trip to Grenada exposed just how many cables and charging bricks I needed to pack. Laptop, tablet, phone, GoPro, AirPods and Dive Computer. Fortunately, three of those items can be charged wirelessly. And that’s where the new Mavrik Pad from Dark Energy came in handy.
Mavrik Pad Video Overview:
Crafted from premium black leather, the low-profile Mavrik Pad will blend into any office or bedside environment. At the resort in Grenada, there were only 2 US style outlets. So having a wireless charging pad allowed my wife and I to share a charging station. For our iPhones, the Mavrik Pad features MagSafe to help ensure the phone is aligned properly. If you don’t have MagSafe compatible phones, the Mavrik Pad has a red/green LED built-in to assist with alignment.
Also included with the Mavrik Pad is a lengthy 6′ reinforced USB-C to USB-C cable and a 20 Watt AC adapter. The cord length is handy when that hotel outlet is sub-optimal or located behind the bed. Which it was in this case. With the Mavrik Pad output rated to 15 Watts, overall charging time on our devices was pretty minimal.
Mavrik Pad Specs:
What I liked and what I didn’t:
Overall, I love the idea of a portable wireless charging pad. And the size and shape of the Mavrik makes it a good travel companion. But there were a few things I thought could be better. If you have a larger phone like I do, the built-in alignment lights on the Mavrik will be covered up. Since the pad is nearly the same size as the phone itself. However, the AirPod PRO’s charged perfectly when set in the middle of the Mavrik
Getting my Shearwater Teric dive computer aligned properly was a bit more difficult. The green light on the Mavrik would illuminate and the watch would indicate charging. Only to check on it a few minutes later and find out it’s no longer charging. It sometimes took 3-4 attempts to finally get it to fully charge the Teric. Possibly not a great interface between these two devices.
Finally, when I received the Mavrik, the upper and lower leather halves were already coming unglued from each other. I feel the two haves should use a more permanent method of attaching. Possibly a rubber or plastic bumper that surrounds the Mavrik and captures the two halves. Or maybe just stitch them together. Either way, the adhesive method is not really cutting it for a $65 charger.
For those that don’t require wireless charging, take a look at the Poseidon PRO from Dark Energy. This durable portable power pack passed our tests with flying colors.
