An uncomfortable feeling is having a wind chill you on the range. Having a layer block the wind while keeping you free to move is vital in all situations. Tomahawk Performance presents a solution to blocking wind in their Crosswind Jacket. They were also kind enough to send us one of these jackets to try. But first, let’s get an introduction to Tomahawk Performance.
Tomahawk Crosswind Jacket Overview:
About Tomahawk Performance
For those who have not heard of them, Tomahawk Performance is a technical apparel company founded in 2022. Their focus is on providing layered clothing systems to answer the needs of special operations, law enforcement, and first responders. Some of their products are also mentioned in one of Jack Carr’s thrillers, which is cool.

Crosswind Overview
The hood starts at the jacket’s top. Thanks to a drawcord at the hood’s back, it is adjustable to fit while wearing a helmet. A neat feature about the hood is that I can store it in a pocket near my neck’s base on the Crosswind’s back. On the front at the wearer’s left is a zippered chest pocket, which also serves as the stow pocket when reversed to store the jacket.
Underneath the Crosswind’s arms are vent holes to prevent overheating when moving around. A dropped-back seat at the jacket’s back on the bottom provides additional coverage when the wearer needs to move. Inside the jacket are drawcords that cinch the hem. Finally, the jacket is made of nylon with a DWR finish for weight reduction and water resistance.

Thoughts on the Crosswind
After using the Crosswind for several weeks, I have been pleased with this jacket. It is easy to store with the stow pocket and small enough to carry in a backpack or range bag. I appreciate that when I have the hood stored, it does not interfere with wearing a plate carrier. As I have said, the jacket is lightweight. I tested that out by wearing the Crosswind during a plate carrier run. The result was that I was not bothered by the weight when wearing the jacket during the run.
The windbreaker’s fit is snug enough to wear under a plate carrier without fighting excess material while still having room to wear light layers. Even when wearing my kit, the Crosswind did not restrict my range of movement. Another feature I appreciate about the jacket is that even though Tomahawk designed it for tactical use, the Crosswind is low vis enough to look like an outdoor gear company jacket. This feature gives wearers a multipurpose windbreaker for different environments.
