Tell me about your pistol? This was an interesting topic brought up at the Kyle Defoor 2 day pistol course I attended.
This topic was brought up during one of his small break-out sessions he does throughout the day to give your eyes a break from shooting.
The usual response to someone asking a dude about his pistol goes something like this; It’s a Glock 17, chambered in 9mm and I’ve put several thousand rounds through it. Although those are true statements, that was not the answer Kyle was looking for.
The reasoning behind this as Kyle explained it was to educate those in your immediate family, friends that you shoot with, or guys you serve with (if you’re law enforcement) in the event they needed to grab your gun and use it in the unlikely event you go down in a gunfight or are not around to employ it in a home invasion scenario.
So let me tell you about my pistol, Specifically my Concealed Carry Glock 17
I go between my subcompact Glock 26 and full-size Glock 17. I have trained the most with my Glock 17 and am comfortable concealing it under just a t-shirt, so that is what we’re going to talk about. I’ve made a few modifications to it after attending Kyle Defoor’s 2-day pistol class.
Sights
The first update I make to almost any handgun that I purchase. The sights I’m running on my Glock 17 are XS Big Dots. Both the front and rear have tritium inserts for low-light engagements.
The XS Big Dots are great for close engagements (15 yards or less). All you do is “dot the I” and pull the trigger. Wherever you place the large front sight dot is where your round will impact, providing you have a proper grip and trigger control.
You can also use the XS Big Dots out past 15 yards. For 15 yards and out, instead of placing the big dot on where you want to hit, you place the top edge of the dot where you want the rounds to impact.
These sights have been proven accurate out to 100 yards in the right hands. With a little practice, you should have no issues accurately engaging targets out to 25 yards.
Match Barrel
One thing to keep in mind is that upgrading to a match barrel will not make up for bad habits.
A match barrel will take a shooter who has mastered the basics and tighten up their accuracy quite a bit. The Wilson Combat match barrel drops right in without any additional material removal.
Wilson Combat match-grade Glock barrels are known for their unsurpassed quality and accuracy. Their match barrels are fully machined from aircraft-grade stainless steel blanks and heat-treated to R/C 40 for maximum service life.
Critical manufacturing tolerances are held to less than .0005″ (that’s a one-half thousandth of an inch!).
To give you phenomenal accuracy, extreme care has been taken to assure that the chamber is glass smooth and perfectly concentric with the bore. In their barrel tests, Wilson Combat routinely obtains test groups of 1/2″ at 25 yards!
That’s it! That’s the setup of my concealed carry Glock 17. Other than upgrading the sights and barrel, everything else is stock.
