Benchmade recently set out to design a full frame, full size automatic knife. Yet take out as much weight as possible without compromising strength. What happened next is the Claymore 9070SBK. The strongest knife to date in the automatic line-up. Incorporating a wicked tough CPM-D2 steel for the blade. And borrowing several design cues from the Claymore mine, this knife has a special place in my heart. As a former Army Ranger, the M18A1 Claymore directional anti-personnel mine was a devastating asset.
“CPM-D2 is the powder-metallurgical variation of the D2 tool steel. Compared to regular D2, it has a somewhat more balanced property profile and better edge retention. Just like the D2, this steel might need a little more care due to its relatively low chromium content of 11.5%.”
The grip is made of Grivory, a semi-crystalline thermoplastic construction material based on polyphthalamide. Yes, I had to look that one up. Bottom line, it’s a really strong and lightweight plastic. Comfortable in all grip positions, the Ranger Green colored handle provides a solid purchase through its unique textured finish. Jimping on the edges of the handle further increase grip for thumb placement. Even the oversized release button features an aggressive knurling for positive engagement. As does the safety switch with a red dot to indicate when the knife is hot. Deploying the automatic knife is fierce so hang on when you push the button.
The Claymore Collection:
“An explosive new design, bound to take the battlefield by storm. The 9070SBK Claymore™ is a slender push-button powerhouse, packed full of hidden features and inspired by one of the most notorious directional mines. Incorporating a new steel to Benchmade’s portfolio of premium materials, the Claymore™ blade has been crafted from CPM-D2 to provide ample toughness and edge retention. Manufactured in the USA, the Claymore™ has set a new bar for closed break strength making this our toughest folder to date.” ~benchmade.com
Upon closer inspection, I noticed a little morse code “easter egg” built into the handle near the blade. The three letters are decoded to read “F T E”. And if you have ever handled or employed an M18A1 Claymore mine, you’ll recall what this stands for. The golden rule of Claymore placement. Front Towards Enemy! I would use the same rule-of-thumb when using the 9070 Claymore. Keeping the cobalt black serrated drop point blade towards the enemy. This knife is part of the Tactical Collection but certainly isn’t exclusive for tactical use. I’ve been carrying the Claymore for a few months now and it has been a great EDC knife.
