As I write this article, it really hits home for me. I have a vested interest in protecting our kids, as I have two in local schools. With all the active shooter incidents we have witnessed on the evening news, it’s scary as hell to keep sending them off to school hoping that nothing happens.
When I drop them off in the mornings and say “I love you”, I can’t help but think that may be the last time I get to say those words to them. Anymore it’s just as scary for the parents as it is for the students.
So what can we do to increase the survivability of our kids while they are at school?
For starters, I’ve added a backpack armor insert to the inside of their backpacks.
This insert will fit into almost any backpack. You can either slip it into the backpack’s laptop sleeve or just slide it in behind all the textbooks and notebooks. The level 3a soft armor will stop almost all handgun rounds. Add that to the other books and notebooks inside the pack and you’ve got yourself a pretty solid shield to protect yourself with. Granted this will not stop rifle rounds, but it does add another layer of protection and peace of mind. My high school daughter carries one inside her backpack throughout the day.
The rigid backpack armor insert helps give me a little peace of mind when I send them off to school and also gives them a sense of security and confidence if something were to happen.
As for everybody else, many Americans carry concealed ready to respond, but there are quite a few that don’t for many different reasons and places where you just can’t carry them legally even if you are licensed. Something you can incorporate into your daily carry bag is a level3a armor insert. These can easily slip into a backpack, messenger bag, or briefcase giving you instant ballistic protection against most handgun rounds.
When it comes to ballistic protection in an emergency, discretion is key. Any shooter worth his salt will prioritize high-threat targets over the civilians he came to massacre, making a guy in a body armor vest the first to be put down in many situations, rather than the last.
That’s where quality ballistic protection that doesn’t add significant bulk or weight to your day comes into play. You need something that doesn’t compromise your ability to function like a normal person but that can protect you when bullets start to fly.
ShotStop has answered the call with ballistic backpack inserts for the average person. Available through The Armor Shop, Their backpack inserts are purpose-built to fit into your EDC bag of choice. ShotStop has developed a quality life-saving product at an affordable price. Being able to make this backpack armor affordable allows more families to add a level of protection to their lives.
The concept is simple. Slide the insert into your backpack or shoulder bag and it creates a layer of ballistic protection between you and the guy with a loaded handgun and a few wires crossed in his brain. The insert is thin and light enough to keep in your backpack every day and forget about it until you need it.
What Is Life Worth To You?
The United States Secret Service released a document titled Mass Attacks in Public Spaces – 2019. Within that document, they talked about the timing of the attacks. Here is what they said.
The attacks occurred on each day of the week and during every month of the year. Two-thirds of the attacks (n = 22, 65%) took place during the day and early evening, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Consistent with previous studies on targeted violence, the attacks in this study were frequently short in duration.
For example, one attack targeting a bar district lasted only 32 seconds, yet still resulted in 9 individuals killed and 20 more injured. Just under half (n = 16, 47%) of the attacks in 2019 ended within five minutes from when the incident was initiated.
Seconds count when first responders are minutes away. The above statement reiterates the importance of having life-saving tools on hand that can keep you alive until first responders are on the scene.
