For the past few years my go-to fixed blade knife for bush crafting and general work around the house has been the Mora Companion. They are solid knives are a bargain price generally under twenty dollars. Last year I decided to upgrade to a Mora Garberg. The Garberg just like the Companion is a solid knife but has a full tang. If there is one drawback to the Mora knives, it’s the sheath. The sheaths that come with the knives are plastic with minimal retention and attachment qualities. The last thing I want from a knife that I may be counting on in the field is for it to fall off my belt or out of the sheath and not be noticed until it’s needed.
The Solution:
I started looking around for a replacement sheath and found a few leather offerings. But they weren’t really what I was looking for. I wanted something with good retention, attachment options, and the ability to add some small items to it. When I stumbled across the ARMORSHEATHS website, I knew I found what I was looking for.
“Kydex is an impact resistant and fire resistant material and is used in Marine and aircraft applications due to its tensile strength, impact resistant, fire resistant and molding qualities. This makes for a tough material that can handle abuse!” ~armorsheaths.com
The Company:
ARMORSHEATHS is a custom Kydex shop. Specializing in custom sheaths for a varied list of standard offerings. Like Bark River, Buck, Gerber, Kabar, Ontario, Mora, TOPs, to name a few. The sheaths are available in a variety of colors, attachments methods, and also offer extra attachments for things like ferro rods. I chose a pancake style sheath for my Mora Garberg, Ordering two, one in OD green with a Tek-Lok. And the second one in grey with a dangler style attachment.
Both sheaths arrived in about two weeks and upon unpacking them the quality was immediately noticeable. Fit is snug to prevent loss and the finish is clean all around with no burrs or blemishes. The sheath with the Tek-Lok rides high and tight to the body.
Dangler Mount
The dangler rides low and moves freely. I prefer the dangler for when I’m out and about in cooler weather while wearing a coat or jacket. The dangler allows the knife to ride just below the bottom of most of my jackets so I don’t have to lift it to get to the knife. This also allows easier sheathing when I’m done. Additionally, the dangler has a slight offset that positions the handle away from your body and clothing making it easier to draw and sheath.
Tek-Lok Mount
The Tek-Lok is nice for the warmer weather where I’m not wearing a jacket. Or for the cooler weather when I am but want to keep my knife out of view. There are also grommets holding the sheath together so you can run para-cord through it. Offering yet another carry option around your neck.
Final Thoughts:
So far I’m happy with these sheaths. They keep the knife secure even when being active and are easy enough to draw from and sheath when done. The different attachments work for my needs. I may even add a ferro rod attachment to one or both in the future and see how that works out. If you’re looking for a replacement sheath for your favorite knife, check out ARMORSHEATHS. Prices start at around thirty-five dollars for a sheath.
