New from Studies and Observations Group (SOG), comes the American made Out The Front Pentagon. Designed and built with the professional in mind, this fast deploying automatic knife is rock solid when needed most. Utilizing SOG’s Dynamic Locking System, the Pentagon is one of the sturdiest OTF knifes once deployed. A common problem with OTF knives is the amount of metallic hardware that often rattles around. In all fairness, there is a lot going on under the hood to make these automatic knives operate properly. But SOG sure got it right with the new Pentagon OTF. Quiet, sturdy and well built. A solid winner.
SOG Pentagon OTF Video Overview:
A deliberate forward push of the button with your thumb and you’re treated to a rapidly deployed and locked 3.79″ CRYO CPM S35VN steel blade. Due to the professional nature of the Pentagon, SOG provided an aggressive Spear Tip blade with one thing in mind. Thrusting it into things. The scalpel sharp two sided blade even features a small blood groove that runs down the center of the blade. Coated in black Titanium Nitride, this Blackout Edition Pentagon means business yet retains a stealthy look to it.
“SOG’s Dynamic Locking System ensures the blade moves quickly to the open or closed position. When it’s there, it’s held firmly in place in a secure, reliable and confident lock-up.” ~sogknives.com
The OTF Switch requires a fair amount of effort to deploy and retract the blade. Fortunately, SOG designed a switch with multiple interface points allowing the leverage needed for reliable activation. Allowing both dominant and weak hand operation. Once you get the hang of it, it’s hard to stop manipulating it for fun.

Final Thoughts:
For the past month or so, I’ve been carrying this Blackout Pentagon OTF. Constantly trying to find its weak point. And so far, it has exceeded my expectations. The OTF Pentagon is robust in weight. More so than I’m used to carrying. But in all fairness, there is a more complicated mechanism on board. I wish the pocket clip was a tad larger and better suited for a deeper carry in the pocket. But I’m really splitting hairs here. Everything else outweighs these minor gripes. SOG has really stepped up their game in the past couple of years. Getting back to the high quality knife maker they once were.
If you’re a Law Enforcement Officer or Military personnel and need a professional, one hand opening knife, the Pentagon OTF would be worth a good look. Priced at $350, this isn’t an inexpensive tool. It’s a knife made in the USA with pride and quality. A knife that won’t let you down when you need it most. One designed specifically for your demanding profession. And backed with a Lifetime Warranty by a company dedicated to providing the best customer service.

Bob, you can’t go wrong with Microtech, Benchmade or Boker Plus, in my experience.

To reset the knife if it goes off track, push the button up to the open position with one hand and carefully pull the blade fully up to complete the reset

I purchased the Pentagon OTF new two weeks ago and it scrapes the sides of the liner and dulls the blade. None of my other otf’s have ever done this, and in reviews it seems to be a quality control problem from a couple years back. Though I bought the knife new, it had been in the shop for some time. Do you know if SOG has fixed this problem in their new releases?
